When you are beginning the process of refreshing your indoor space or building a new one from scratch, it may seem overwhelming at first. How do you know which color of paint to use, what kind of furniture to buy, how many wall accessories you might need — and what kind — not to mention how in the world you’re supposed to arrange it all?
While these are valid questions, each stemming from techniques it takes a lifetime to perfect, there are a handful of interior design tips that can help you get started with conceptualizing your new space:
- Think of function first. It can be tempting, while working in the creative stage of interior design, to begin designing purely for aesthetic value. However, a room is, first and foremost, a place for you to live in. Think first about how you want to exist in this room — where will you sit? What will you do? — and then design around that.
- Pick a statement piece. If you don’t know what color scheme you want for a given room, pick a piece of art or a piece of furniture that you know you really want in it. You can build the room’s aesthetic around that piece, since you know it’s going to be there.
- Pick a color scheme. Usually, color schemes will have a dominant color, and then one or two accent colors that work well with each other. Pick out which dominant color you want and then see what supporting colors you like best!
